Friday Favorites

 Happy Friday!
I walked more this week than I ever have since living in New York. I was super proud after learning 4 city blocks make a mile.  I spent time with some great friends, and I am working all weekend (yay retail)! Bart was extra cuddly this week, despite the humidity.

Okay I really love this store. It is down the street from me in Brooklyn, and I always find myself in here on rainy days.

some snapshots this week...
1) new pretty dress from Pema
2) Bart loves watching the world cup-USA! USA! USA! no biting!
 3) my flowers died, and now this week there is a new bud
4) quiet moment around 7:00 on a weeknight in the apartment listening to music

I am burning my lovely pink candle and my pretty fig leaf candle ALL THE TIME.
my room smells amazing y'all.

also I randomly met a psychic who told me I have a lot to look forward too!
(not her below- this is Carly who sometimes sends me things like this)

reading:

"girls compete with each other, women empower each other."

did you see the elephant on Jimmy Fallon this week? because you should.
as well as, the roots on a rollercoaster

cheers to this weekend! xo

woohoo for Wednesday

I am a massive Nora Ephron fan, so when a friend invited me to a showing of "When Harry Met Sally" I immediately and emphatically said yes. We packed a picnic and watched on a giant projector with about 2 million other massive fans. It was perfection.

It is honestly still surreal that I live in New York. Earlier today I was on the upper west side for a few appointments, and walked around the central park area on the phone-while watching the movie I saw so many places I walked this afternoon. I was also watching with the skyline twinkling behind me. It was such a great experience that meant so much to me.

By the way can we talk about JUST how good that movie is?! I would put quotes up that I love, but it could get wayyy too lengthy, so go watch it for me will you?

got some splainin to do

soooooo I missed Friday favorites!

promise this Friday's addition will be jam packed to make up for the loss

meanwhile...

Happy Monday friend!
It's a been a long weekend for me BUT, I did see some cool stuff here in the burg.
Want me to tell you about it? Okay, if you insist!
(you will see I took a couple of pictures of strangers, but it was to show you how wonderful they are not to be mean or creepy)

First off, I went to a bar on Saturday night that is dog friendly, a.k.a. Magical puppy land.
A bar where no one needs a leash, the music is loud, and it is time to run around having a good time. A bar where I tried a pickle back-have you heard of this? It's weird.

Second I saw this man:

glued to pride and prejudice on the train-
if you don't think he seems great we can't be friends.

Also she

belted out the Star Spangled Banner opera style at 10 a.m.

For some reason I'm only wearing dresses lately?

I am a Denim obsessed girl. Not sure if I'm gravitating towards all dresses because it's hot outside or a better way to hide my shape when feeling insecure? All I know is I have worn a dress every day for eight days straight!

Bart

went on a trip to upstate new york this weekend, and is still tired from all that fun.

by damn its too hot outside

I think everyone should hear this song. I love the Stella sisters, and their cover/video is beautiful. Although..this video makes me a little homesick ha

It is currently 90000 degrees in my apartment. -GROSS NESS- I'm feeling pretty stupid for complaining that it stayed cold so long! It's been a pretty eventful week here in the burg-I left a great job to start another great job. I feel really lucky to have these opportunities, and fingers crossed the next few months will be a seamless transition.

Also, I had a few celeb sightings this week! The best moment was seeing Vanessa Bayer! She could not have been nicer, but I barely let myself interact with her because I was GEEKING out. I love her, and I just wanted  her to do Miley! well...old Miley.

On another strange note-tonight at work someone in Australia called to place an order. AUSTRALIA. do you realize how far away that is? It was like seven in the morning her time, and I found myself being that jerk who wanted to talk about kangaroos the whole time!  I refrained because I was pretending to be professional.

On a hot summer night in Cooper Park, some pals in Brooklyn made hot dogs and s'mores. this scene got brought up a lot.
hope your week is going well xo

12:55 a.m.

Hello late night crowd!

I'm pretty tired, but not sleepy...know what I mean? My brain kind of buzzes and every thought I pushed out in the light of day, comes to the surface in one giant wave.  It doesn't help that my room is warm right now-my fans are struggling to beat the humidity accumulated while I was away at work. It's too noisy on the street to sleep with the windows open, so I'm kicking off all blankets and piling my hair on the top of my head.
I'm tired but not sleepy, and thinking about all the stuff happening here far away from my sweet Mississippi.

New York is still surreal sometimes-I tried on wedding dresses yesterday at work for fun and today I saw quite a few celebrities. I broke my first pair of shoes from all the walking- a true "I live here" moment for me. I saw the cutest, friendliest dog I've ever seen (except for my own) at a coffee shop that makes the best cupcakes I've ever eaten. Someone on a whim read my tarot cards today-a first for me, and I got a pretty perfect set of cards. The weather today was really really perfect, and all over Brooklyn you could hear people celebrating USA's dramatic win. At the risk of sounding cliche-Days here are either so so high or desperately low-I've never been anywhere else quite like it.

There's been a video of Shonda Rhime's commencement going around the internet-it's great, especially if you like "grey's anatomy"-sounds a lotttt like an izzie steven's speech. My biggest take away was she said "be a doer not a dreamer". I am realizing the importance of those words each day I attempt to find my dream here. So, that's my plan this week...DO. When in doubt keep doing.

And since it's time for bed I'll leave you with a song.
goodnight xo

friday favorites

We survived another week!  Now on to the favorites

I loved this sweet post Natalie wrote.

I really love all the random Brooklyn inspiration.

I always have these covers on repeat KOL-dancing on my own...JFlynn-papa was a rodeo

I just finished a "chandelier" project, and I'm happy with my result. I hope to do a post on my space soon!

I loved going to this little arthouse theatre in the middle of the week on a rainy day.

Last but not least the world cup is going on!

Happy Weekending pals xo

keep in mind

Shailene Woodley has been criticized by the media over the past few months about her healthy lifestyle, views on Feminism, and recently the decision to appear nude in a film. I just finished her interview with instyle mag, and I honestly loved a lot of what she said. I wasn't expecting to take much away-personally I think we all place too much emphasis on what celebrities are saying most of the time.

I have a tendency to be hyper critical of myself. I can be obsessive about body image, the way my voice sounds, seeing myself on camera, choosing my words wisely, overthinking the future, placing too much emphasis on people's thoughts of me etc. I've been working on being kind to myself this year. I don't always get it right- but I am trying to stop negative thoughts, and focus my energy instead on meaningful things. This interview was a good example of keeping things in perspective and living each day with a positive intention.

When asked how she preps for the red carpet-"Get in a bath and look at your body and be like, Wow, thank you so much for hosting my mind and my heart."
shouldn't we all do this?

I also read  this letter  a mother wrote her daughter forever ago and I still love it.

Lastly, Audrey Hepburn a.k.a. the freaking queen said- "For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone."

I guess these are just some things to keep in mind...
I'm really lucky to have such a supportive boyfriend... He is the best.

typical

Hey it's stupid bloody Tuesday!

I had to wake up far too early this morning, and then ride the train with two classes of seventh graders going on a field trip. There was a lot of excitement let me just tell you. I must ask though..who goes to school in June?! Is this a thing in New York? There are kids in the high school across the street from me as well...questions. I finally got to my stop, and shortly into my walk I saw this hair shop...I'm pretty much obsessed with the rainbow bouffant. They actually all looked amazing.
I wasn't able to get pictures (rushing), but next door was a doggy day care with huge glass windows-I saw like 20-30 adorable puppies running wild. It destroyed all bad feelings about being up early.
I finished my errand, and on the way home stopped in the grocery store to pickup a few things. I will never get used to the line at Trader Joe's. I understand it moves quickly, but it is still insane. This was at like 10:30 a.m annnnddd it is a week day.

I guess it was worthwhile because today dun dun dunnn I made lunch.  I can bake all day, but I don't cook. It stresses me out, and I'm constantly scared of a potential fire. However, today I prepared bbq chicken and pineapple quesadillas that actually turned out really well. sidenote: Bart helped.

Then it was back to the heat to run a few more errands. I hate weather like today-100% humidity and completely indecisive-looks like rain but not a drop has fallen. Tonight I'm enjoying some down time with fellow Brooklynites. typical

ch ch ch changes

I'm terrible at change, and this week will be full of it for me.  I hate it.
so naturally it's time to just ignore it? In fact, my motto this year has been OVER IT.  I say this at least once a day.

for example:
somebody was rude? over it.
pressure to be skinnier/ prettier/ smarter? over it.
100 degrees outside? over it.
rammed my arm on the door frame at 8 a.m. because I wasn't fully awake? over it.

You get the point...its awesome. So I'm going to distract myself with some things I whole-heartedly like.

like this song:tower song
BUT mainly his speech about his dream in the middle because it is wonderful and funny
Rayland Baxter has been a favorite of mine for a little while now. He's a Nashville native but has lived in Israel, and is just all around the coolest.

like the fact: that my chocolate macaroon looked like a tiny hamburger:

THIS interview my future husband did at Cannes: greatness
seriously rare form-his answer to the song of the moment is swoon worthy

and these angsty quotes: "rather be someone's shot of whiskey than everyone's cup of tea."
"Why the f**k not me? should be your motto" Mindy Kaling (hero)

and Bart's new "loyal luxe cabin" situation:

also this doc. we at apt 2 loved tonight:  Mortified
it's people getting on stage and reading their childhood journals-hilarious and brave.

okay cheers to Monday xo

How is it already thursday?

I really loved this talk: creative mornings   if you are looking for a little encouragement this week.

I hate how it is popular right now to promote the idea of happiness alllll the time. I feel like every time I'm online there is a new article about it, or a blog that depicts a storybook life.   It's wonderful to feel happy, but there is so much good to be found in the messy moments. Ruthie's talk is a great example of finding joy out of despair.
